Mojácar is the jewel in the crown of the Costa Almeria. The old village of Mojácar, perched on the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera mountains overlooking the Mediterranean coastline, is considered to be the most Arabic location outside the Islamic world, and it's tightly packed traditional whitewashed sugar cube houses clinging to the rock can be seen from miles around. The narrow, cobbled streets restrict vehicle access and a walk around the village will reveal ancient bars and restaurants tucked away with the little shops under ornate wrought iron balustrades.
At the foot of the mountain range, the Mojácar Playa beach area stretches some 17 kilometres, comprising rugged natural beaches, where you can find your own private cove, to well-kept EEC blue flag beaches with water sport attractions and lively beach bars. Along this stretch you can also find supermarkets, banks, offices, chemists, boutiques, doctors, dentists, a Red Cross station, many restaurants to suit a variety of palates, bars from a lively pub scene to a romantic bistro in which to quietly sit and enjoy the warm evening and admire the sea views.
This part of Spain has not been commercialised and spoilt, as have so many
other popular resorts and costas. Development is strictly controlled with no high rise
buildings being permitted. Around a third of the businesses are
British owned, and most of the remainder speak some English so making
yourself understood is not a problem.
Mojácar enjoys an excellent location, protected from behind by the Cabrera
mountain range and overlooking the warm and inviting Mediterranean sea. Its Southerly
location, close proximity to the African continent and the high surrounding
mountains assures an exceptional subtropical climate, where temperatures are
kind all year round with an average of 21 degrees Celsius. The climate allows
for an abundance of wild flowers and herbs, and this area is host to a large
variety of birds. Mojácar is well known as the sunniest place in the whole of
Spain.
Above all, Mojácar is a family resort. This is not
a Magalluf or Benidorm, but
a friendly place where visitors are welcomed by locals and the many British who have
settled here.
